Perry County Fair

Visited: July 20

The Perry County Fair featured one of my favorite sports on the night I visited--- motocross! I watched several rounds of the motocross with my family. One little girl in the stands came up to me with her mother. The little girl's mom said that her daughter thought my crown was very pretty. I asked the girl if she was here to watch the motocross. She replied, "Yes." I then told her that I ride dirtbikes. Her eyes about bulged out of her head! She was soooooo amazed! Prior to the motocross, I was escorted by Senior Fair Board member, Lee, and his wife. Lee told me that the fair started in 1953 and that he was the fair king in 1957! What an honor it was to meet one of the very first kings of the Perry County Fair. I think it is safe to say that Lee has a passion for the fair; he showed livestock at the fair for 53 years between 4-H and the open class shows. He said that this year they had a "royalty reunion", where the past kings and queens could gather. Lee treated me to dinner at St. Rose Catholic Church's food booth. We watched the "Pork Chop Review" live, trained pig show. The pigs and their trainer were from Missouri. These pigs jumped hurdles, sang songs, and pushed a piglet in his carriage! It was too cute! I also "milked a cow" at the Farm Bureau station where they had a model cow that could be "milked". I visited the show arena where goat showmanship was taking place. My 4-H Ambassador friend, Mackenzie, who was Perry County's 2009 1st Runner-Up Fair Queen, introduced me to the crowd in the stands. Also, I was interviewed by 107.3 WYBZ radio about how I became the Ohio Fair's Queen. I ran into a few of my friends that I had met last year at State 4-H Leadership Camp. They told me that square dancing was about to start in a while. I ventured over towards the square dancing area, and I was astounded by the square dancing that I witnessed. I was told that many 4-H'ers and fair-goers square dance every night of the fair from 9p.m. to midnight. They were having a blast! I am going to have to take some square dancing lessons before I will be able to square dance at the Perry County Fair in the future!
